Figures released this week showed that a third of Islanders visiting Accident and Emergency at St Mary’s hospital were forced to wait more than four hours last month.
This is the impact on the island of a national NHS emergency caused by 9 years of Tory cuts. Last week, data revealed that NHS waiting times were now the longest ever since targets were introduced.
Richard Quigley, Labour’s candidate in the General Election, said:
“These figures should be a wake-up call for Islanders. This is the direct consequence of Tory underfunding of the NHS over nearly a decade.”
“The Accident and Emergency waiting times are merely the tip of the iceberg.
We all know that the Tories have announced plans to make deep cuts to
acute services at St Mary’s and move them to the mainland;
We’ve recently seen how cuts have forced the closure of a dementia ward on the island, forcing vulnerable patients to travel to the mainland away from family and friends;
GP services are closing or merging across the island, with residents in Brading the latest to be forced to petition against closures; and
We have a serious staffing problem, with hundreds of empty posts in the Island’s hospital and surgeries.”
“This can’t go on. It’s quite clear that the NHS isn’t safe in Tory hands nationally or locally. We need a Labour government committed to funding the NHS based on need, and an Island Labour MP who will fight to restore our services.”
“It’s no exaggeration to say that if the Tories win a majority on December 12th, then the dismantling of our health services on the Island will only accelerate. We have four weeks to save the NHS.”
